Mel Bay  Charlie Byrd Guitar Stylings, by Charlie Byrd and John Griggs. $17.95, book/CD, 48 pages.

Expanding Techniques Through Pieces, by John Griggs. $17.95, book/CD, 40 pages.

Showcasing original music from Charlie Byrd and John Griggs, Charlie Byrd Guitar Stylings is a 48 page book featuring 10 very nice classical/jazz styled pieces, with each written out in TAB and standard notation. This is a very enjoyable volume, and you may even find youself putting the disc in the CD changer just for the tunes alone.

John Griggs also has another new title out called Expanding Technique Through Pieces. This book is intended to teach and strengthen pick style and fingerstyle. The music is divided between the book and a pull-out section, with each part working on a different facet of style. You can use this book with another player, or play along with the CD accompaniment. Each piece is played in its entirety on the CD, with Guitar I and Guitar II panned left and right respectively. All music is shown in standard notation, with tab underneath the staff. Overall, this book is a lot of fun, and very educational. Pieces include Recuerdos de la Alhambra, Capricho Arabe, Chopin's Waltz in C# Minor, Maple Leaf Rag, Two Guitars, Beethoven's Adagio Cantible, and La Paloma. Best suited for intermediate to advanced players, though diligent beginners could reap large rewards.
