"Power Tools For Guitar," by Fred Cockfield and Michael Wilton. Mel Bay Publications, Book/CD, 80 pages, US$17.95.

Power Tools is a theory and technique-focused book for guitarists, and utilizes horizontal fretboard diagrams to explain concepts. The intro begins with 4 fret warmups played at 132 tempo (8th notes). This may be a little fast for some beginners, but it definitely gives one something to aspire to. The exercises illustrate these ideas: Major scales in multiple positions, scale sequences, extended major scales, intervals (Yes!!), arpeggios, harmonized scales and the related chords, open chords, movable chord patterns, music theory quizzes, pentatonic patterns, extended minor scales. The sum of these exercises is a very nice basis, if not essential, for the guitarist in any style. If you prefer the horizontal guitar diagrams over TAB and standard notation, then this is the book (it should be noted that a few examples are shown in TAB and notation).
